TacOps Tourney 2003

Overview

It has become a tradition to run a TacOps tourney every two years and 2003 is no exception
(we have now run well over that time, but what the heck... earlier tourneys check out at the "Old Tourneys" page).

Again the tourney will try and establish the best overall TacOps player by challenging the tourney participants with various different tasks and game modes.

As always the Tourneys try to evaluate the TacOps engine in its current version to the fullest,
so, with version 4 out last year, this time net gaming and engineering assets have been
included, also we try and make full use of its modular scenario design structure to
facilitate game play.

Another purpose of the tourneys is to attract new players to our ranks and to
provide Lessons Learned for all participants. At least part one of this seems to work
as this year for the first time we have reached the magic 32-player mark that will
make the tourney easier to organize.

New in this years tourney (and only possible since v4 of TacOps) is the way players
prepare their games:

All games will be conducted off pre-saved game files that are downloadable for the players
from the scenario page. Those pre-saved game files include the players units ready for setup,
pre-set preferences, air support, supply and support, a scenario description, one or more
overlays for setup and intel, the Custom TacOps scenario and the map.

This reduces player workload to a minimum and leaves lot more room for the fun,
as all players have to do is to download the tourney scenario folder and run it.

The tournament will commence in September with a round of qualification games.

The qualification games will be played from within groups, group players will play against each other in three custom made TacOps scenarios, each of which has been carefully chosen and modified by the umpire to test specific tactical skills (e.g., evacuating an objective, conducting a mobile defense, etc.). Players will play a scenario once, then switch sides and replay the same scenario vs. the same opponent. Ranking will be determined by a comparison of scores, which will be based on factors such as time of mission completion, attrition, etc. (For more details on how points will be awarded during the qualification phase, see individual scenario descriptions by clicking on "Details" at the side of the scenario overview on the scenario page.)

All qualification games will be conducted as 2-player-netgames. This will also allow non-participants to look on as spectators (observer mode) and should help to finish the qualification round fairly fast.

Spectators, by the way, are very much encouraged to join in the fun, and factor in greatly as an integral part of what should be a unique learning experience for everyone. In fact, the sharing of tactics and Lessons Learned could turn out to be even more rewarding than the competition itself. Besides, a tournament just isn't a tournament without a lot of people in the stands whooping it up!

Once the qualification trials are over, the referee will announce the 8 qualified finalists, who will duel their way through the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and finally the Championship game.

Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be played in normal PBEM mode and KO system (winners proceed, losers are out). Also for this portion of the tourney the relevant information can be found at the scenario page. Those who want to follow the action can still do so despite not being able to log on to the players if they are on the TacOps mailing list and follow the announcements regarding replay files, while those who have not joined the mailing list can still check the progress of players by checking the Player Standings listed at this site, and of cause replay files will be made available at the tourney site itself.

The Final will be played in referee umpired multi-player mode and with orders time restricted, this to test a very different skill of the players that have made it that far: Thinking and acting under time pressure. Again for this event spectators are very much welcome, here they might even get the chance to ride the battlefield in their on observation press helicopter...<g>.
